Paracas – Nazca Lines (Full day)
A full day private tour to the mysterious Nazca Lines, located six hours south of Lima. We begin the tour at 4:30 a.m. when our driver picks you up from Casa Bella and drives you straight to the first stop, the Ballesta Islands, considered the Peruvian Galapagos. Judging by this name, it is no wonder that it shelters a variety of wildlife. Sea lions, penguins and a great variety of birds, cormorants and pelicans use the islands, to feed, breed, and play in the sun.
The islands are located about 230 km south of Lima in the Pisco-Bay. After a short drive to the bay, the Paracas Ballesta Islands are easily accessed by a two hour boat trip. The boat trip itself can include a visual visit to the “Kandelaver,” an image carved into the side of the rock that is said to be made by ancient Nazca people 2000 years ago.
We then continue to the Huacachina oasis, a tiny oasis place 4 kms from Ica. The small pond and the giant dunes make it a good alternative than staying in Ica. Sand boards can be hired everywhere for riding down the dunes.
We then drive to our main target, the Nazca Lines. The Nazca Lines are located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the pampa (a large flat area of southern Peru). The Nazca Lines are an engima. No one has proof who built them or why. Since their discovery, the Nazca Lines have inspired fantastic explanations from ancient gods, a landing strip for returning aliens, a celestial calendar created by the ancient Nazca civilization — putting the creation of the lines between 200 BC and 600 AD, used for rituals probably related to astronomy, to confirm the ayllus or clans who made up the population and to determine through ritual their economic functions held up by reciprocity and redistribution, or a map of underground water supplies.
We get back to Lima at around 9:00 p.m.
